From a Majlis of Shaykh al-Hadith Hazrat Maulana Fazlur Rahman Sahib A’zami (daamat barakatuhum)*
1. It is extremely important to teach children the Qur’an with tajwid right from the beginning. There is generally weakness in this regard.
2. It is vital for Hifz teachers to make sure their students read with full tajwid, taking due care with correct pronunciation, ghunna, ikhfa, madd etc.
3. In Hifz, the sabaq is the most important stage for teachers to take into consideration. If mistakes are allowed to slip through in the sabaq stage, it is extremely difficult to correct them later on.
4. Students should be taught the rules and symbols of waqf properly. Jami al-Waqf should be taught.
5. Many huffaz in Tarawih stop on the لا symbol, as if it is short for لازم (compulsory stop), whereas it is an abbreviation of لا تقف (don’t stop).
Stopping on the لا symbol separates between two parts which shouldn’t be separated.
For example:
الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ *لا* قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Here, the first part is a conditional clause (shart), and from قالوا onwards is its consequence clause (jaza’). Stopping on the لا symbol means that both parts, which should come together in one breath, have been separated.
5. The لا symbol doesn’t mean it is not allowed to stop there under any circumstances, such as if a person runs out of breath. The point is that a person shouldn’t make a stop there and then carry on from the next word, without going back a few words.
May Allah Ta’ala give us all the ability to practice upon this valuable advice. Amin.
