Assalamualaikum

I would like to know if it’s permissible to buy muharam gifts for my children now and give it to them on the 10 muharam or do I have to buy it on the 10 muharam to gain barakah in my sustenance?

Answer:

Our response is as follows,

The narration refers to spending on one’s family on the day of Aashura itself (i.e. 10th Muharram) as recorded in the Hadith. The Hadith states, “Whoever spends freely (by way of expanding the daily expenditure) upon his family on the day of Aashura then Allah Taáala will inflate his sustenance throughout the year.” This means that the head of the household will spend more freely and lavishly on his family on that day by way of purchasing and providing extra food and other such necessities. In simple terms, this means that what a person spends on normal days upon his family (for their food and necessities), he will increase that expenditure on the day of Aashura.

Giving gifts to one’s family, children, relatives and friends is a virtuous act, but it should be done on a regular basis (whenever one can afford) and not restricted to Aashura. The custom that is in vogue nowadays by way of exchanging gifts among family members or/and relatives and friends on the day of Aashura is not what is intended by the Hadeeth and is not a Sunnah that is established and confined to this day. The fact that people are paying particular attention to giving gifts on this day (as in your case, where you are already contemplating this before the day even arrives) indicates that people are assuming it to be a Sunnah of this day and attaching special importance and significance to an act that is baseless.
